Samkelo's art is inspired by both the internal and external experiences of his life. The people around him have played an integral role in the evolution of his work over time and form a key resource in his artistic process.
 
His portraits and figures are a visual dialogue comprised of conversations and experiences, captured in visual format. The portrayal of emotion, particularly from the perspective of a man takes on a unique format with the application of an impasto technique and the bold use of colourful strokes to convey the emotions that the subject is feeling and the artist is perceiving.
